Growing your own whilst staying at home…

We know many of you are keeping busy in your gardens and allotments at the moment, and May is a great month to start growing your own vegetables.

Our Head Gardener & Grower Catherine Butters shares her top tips for turning your own crop in no time.

It’s not too late to sow beans of any description…

…runners, French or broad beans, you can sow direct or in pots.

We’ll be planting courgettes over the next couple of weeks…

…we sowed ours at the end of March, but many local nurseries are open and need your support, so you can order plants from them. A courgette plant will produce two to three courgettes per week and will keep going for months.

Radish makes for a really quick and easy crop…

…just four weeks from sowing to harvest, and they’re delicious, try roasting them or add to a salad.

Top tip…

…now is a good time to sow beetroot too, and I recommend sowing them close together. That way, in a few weeks you can take out every other one (known as ‘thinning’) and use the leaves in a salad. The ones that are left have space to grow on into actual beetroot – normally you would just discard the thinnings, but they really are too good to waste.
